Comstock House was built in 1932 as the United States was recovering from the Great Depression. Anna Botsford Comstock, a conservationist ahead of her time, had a significant influence on William Smith’s decision to make a women’s coordinate college for Hobart. Anna Comstock was a progressive thinker because of her involvement with women’s rights and was the first woman to be apart of the Board of Trustees. Comstock House was the first building to be built on the Hobart and William Smith College campus since the Miller House in 1911. Today, Comstock House remains located on the hill where William Smith students can appreciate her contribution to the colleges.
