In the early 1900’s, many prosperous autocrats took up residency on the rapidly developing South Main Street. William Heathcote Delancy was no different, moving into 616 South Main in 1839 after being appointed the first Episcopal Bishop of Western New York. Having studied under Bishop Hobart, Delancy was asked to lead Hobart College’s Episcopal Church. He lived in the house until he died in 1865, where, after several owners, the house was eventually bought by HWS in 1974. Once a Faculty House and now a guest house, office and classroom area, the Delancy House represents the Bishop’s dedication to the Colleges.
